Goju is one of the traditional Japanese styles of karate, featuring a combination of hard and soft techniques. Goju means soft blocks and hard counters. While studying Goju, a major emphasis is given to breathing correctly. Goju has a kata or form focused on breathing correctly. Goju combines hard striking attacks such as kicks and closed hand punches with softer open hand techniques for blocking and controlling the opponent.
Goju is highly dynamic and makes a balanced use of a large number of body muscles. It provides excellent all-around exercise and develops coordination and agility.
Many people across the world have trained in Goju because because of its usefulness as self-defense. This style is widely practiced by both children and adults as a means of keeping in top physical condition.
As a sport, Goju has a relatively short history. Contest rules have been developed, and it is now possible to hold actual matches as in other competitive sports. Due to the speed, the variety of techniques and the split-second timing it calls for many athletic-minded people have come to show an interest in competitive karate. With the increase in interest, it seem that karate will continue to grow in popularity.
